Rotary meeting began today with a departure from the norm. Chorister Brad Barber provided lyrics to a distinctly Rotary song called The Rotary Bell. A powerful chorus of Rotarians joined in to make the change quite enjoyable.

Our guests included ADG Steve Skinner, from the Logan Club, as well as Johanna and George, service dogs for Eve Jones and Paul Damon.

We dispensed with fellowship and Sergeant-at-Arms to provide ample time for our presenter.

We were pleased to hear from First District Court Judge Ben Hadfield.

Judge Ben H. Hadfield was appointed to the First District Court in March 1993 by Gov. Michael O. Leavitt. He serves Box Elder, Cache, and Rich counties.

After graduating from the J. Reuben Clark College of Law at Brigham Young University in 1978, he joined the firm of Mann, Hadfield & Thorne and later became a partner.

Judge Hadfield is a past president of the Rex E. Lee Inn of Court.

In addition to his courtroom responsibilities, he has served the courts on the Ethics Advisory Committee, on the Board of District Court Judges, and as a member of the Judicial Council.

Judge Hadfield served as presiding judge in the First District from July 2004 to July 2006.

He currently serves as a member of the Board of District Court Judges.

Judge Hadfield shared information relating to the First District court including statistics and responsibilities. He was accompanied by Law Clerk Ashley Bown.

We appreciate Judge Hadfield and Ms Bown for being with us today and providing a very informative presentation.

In two week, Garl Waldron has arranged for a representative of Honda Motor Corp to present to the group.

It was a cold January day, but Rotarians met as always on Tuesday. Our program today was arranged by Rotarian Steve Vincent and was a rpesentation from the Brigham City Fine Arts Center and Fine Arts Council. Representing the group were Directors Jennifer Delaney and Hal Allen.

Also presenting at the meeting was Executive Director Susan Niedert, shown below with her side kick, Marva.

The Brigham City Fine Arts Council and Center, a 501c (3) non profit organization, have occupied their current location on 100 West since 1999 and provide numerous programs and events for the local community, dedicated to developing an appreciation for the arts in northern Utah. Over 3100 volunteer hours were given in 2011.

The center had over 1500 participants last year in various programs including:

Art Classes
Art Camps
Theater School
Music Instruction space
The Puppetry Outreach Program
Puppet Story Time
The World of Puppetry Museum
The Peach Days Melodrama
Music Concerts and Oepn Mic night at the Fine Arts Center

Over 450 people use the facility weekly for a variety of functions and it is available for rent from the Council.

As the Center continues to grow, there is an ever present need for suuport from the local community to keep it a viable operation, both in volunteers and in funding.

Thanks to the Brigham City Fine Arts Council and Center for their very informative program today.

Rotarian Les Dunn arranged for our program today. Our Speaker was Katie McVey, Deputy Director of the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.

Katie is from North Central Wisconsin and has a Master in Raptor Biology from Boise State. She presented historical and other information about the local bird refuge.

1928 - The Refuge was formed by an act of Congress
1929 - Refuge first staffed
1982 - A brand new visitors center was built following years of growth in both size and opportunity but also in reputation throughout the world.
1983 - Refuge and visitor center buildings destroyed by flood waters
1990 - Efforts began again to reclaim the refuge for visitors having been abandoned since 1983
2006 - New Visitors Center built on West Forest Dtreet run completely from solar power
2011 - West Forest road access reopened

The refuge is the home or stopover of over 250 species of birds throughout the year. Besides being a stopover for migratory birds, it is also a great hunting and fishing area.

The refuge sponsors an education program aimed at Preschool, 4th grade and High School aged youth, including the Youth Conservation Corps

Travis Rose, Sergeant-At-Arms, raised a few dollars for the Foundation today, including a double fine for Brad Barber simply for asking a basic question about the Rotary Magazine. Sheesh!

We were fortunate to hear from the Brigham City LDS Temple missionaries in club meeting today. Brother and Sister Peck shared considerable information with us about the progress of the temple in downtown Brigham City, as well as historical information about the temple and the surrounding area.

It was very informative, until it got to the question eveyone has been asking: When will it be finished? Sadly, they were unable to offer any further information than "Sometime this fall".

I guess the Rotary Club gets to wait like everyone else for the answer to that question.

For those interested: Applications to participate in the Mexico House Building service project are due by January 31 in preparation for the June 9th departure. The Rotary and Interact Clubs will be building two more houses this year in Puerto Peñasco Mexico. Anyone interested in participating should contact Annette Barber or Tere Moore.

ALSO, if you have youth involved in Interact, or know someone who is, that might be interested in the mexico trip, be sure to let them know. The deadline is approaching fast!

Great turn out to Brigham City Rotary Club.

Jerry Capener introduced the program for

Randy Capener, who was out of town.

(Apparently he's climbing some hill somewhere...)

Speakers were Kassie Capener, (Randy's wife)

Brice Passey and Cherie Case.

They shared information about the new

Promontory Charter School

that is being built in Perry.

They shared the history of the school

the teaching philosophy

and the progress as they get ready to begin

construction of the facility in Perry.

A charter was granted by the State of Utah last Spring

and already theey have nearly 500 applicants

for 450 seats.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held

December 10, 2011 for their facility.

All are welcome to attend the groundbreaking

and learn more about the school.

J Wayne Johnson - 1916-2011

It was a solemn day in the Brigham Rotary Club.

Rotarian and friend J Wayne Johnson

passed away last Sunday morning

after a short illness.

Wayne has been a Rotarian

since December, 1980,

and has long filled the position of

Club Music Director after his years

of teaching band and music in the local schools.

He was a great example to all of us

of continued dedication to the things he loved

and believed in.

He always had a smile and a warm handshake

to share with everyone he came in contact with.

Wayne will be sorely missed by all of the

members of the Brigham City Club,

as well as by the Brigham City Community.

His obituary follows:

Together Again

J. Wayne Johnson, 95 passed away on Sunday Nov. 13, 2011 after a brief illness. He was born on Oct. 10, 1916 in Brigham City, Utah to Olof Peter and Lilly Young Johnson. He was the eighth of ten children. He attended local schools and graduated from Box Elder High in 1935. He later received Bachelor and Master Degrees from Utah State Agricultural College where he excelled in music and was the drum major of the marching band.

Wayne married Edith Thorne, his childhood sweetheart, on Aug. 16, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were dedicated to each other through 69 years of exemplary and loving marriage. She preceded him in death on Feb. 9, 2010.

He taught school in Wyoming and Idaho before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1943. He received his wings as a B-25 bomber pilot, at LaJunta, Colorado Air Force Base and was stationed in the U.S. until the end of WWII. After his military service Wayne began with the Box Elder School District teaching band, orchestra, and vocal classes.

He retired in 1980, estimating that he had taught 4000 instrumentalists during his career. He was class "Dad" to the graduating class of 1952.

He was an original member of the Senior Swingers Band and enjoyed playing the drums and singing with them until the time of his death.

He was a past member of the Lion's Club, president of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce and Sons of Utah Pioneers.

Wayne was a dedicated member of the Brigham City Rotary Club.

He was involved with the Golden Spike re-enactment since its inception in 1947 through 2010, usually leading the band or playing the role of General Dodge.

He served in many of the offices of the LDS church, including President of the Intermountain Indian School Branch, and was currently serving as an instructor of the High Priests Group of the Brigham City 9th ward.

Surviving are his four children John W. (Cynthia) Johnson DDS, Mesquite, NV; Dale T. (BJ) Johnson, North Ogden; Janet (Bob) Sanford, Brigham City; Dawn Marie (Rett) Ferrell, Edmond, OK; 17 grandchildren, and 42 great grandchildren.Wayne was preceded in death by his six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at the Brigham City 9th Ward, 236 E. 100 S. at 12:00 noon. Friends may call at Gillies Funeral Chapel 634 E. 200 S., Brigham City on Thurs. Nov. 17 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. and at the church on Friday from 11:00 to 11:45 A.M.

Interment will be held in the Brigham City Cemetery.

The family would like to express appreciation to the Hospitalists and staff at the Brigham City Community Hospital.

Good group today for our weekly meeting.

A number of announcements were made

regarding Youth Programs:

RYLA will be held a week later than

it has been this coming year.

That means our youth won't have to

miss Peach Days to attend.

ALSO: RYLA is now open to Sophomores,

making it available to even more youtth,

as well as making a return visit possible.

Plans are in motion for the

Mexico Service project

scheduled for June 9 - 16 2012.

Anyone interested in participating

needs to make the commitment by Feb 1, 2012

Our speaker was PDG Fred Berthrong.

He is past chair of the

Utah District Foundation Committee.

November is Rotary Foundation Month!

Fred discussed the changes in the

funding of grants through the

new pilot program that our district

has been participating in.

He talked of the many projects

Rotary has been involved in,

reminding Rotarians that

no other service group has ever taken on

a project the size of Polio Plus

and had near the success we have had.

Fred and his wife will be entering

the LDS Mission Training Center

this coming Monday as they prepare

to serve a humanitarian aid mission

to Chile. He hopes to get the local

clubs in Chile involved in

any way he can while providing

aid and help to the Chilean people.

I apologize that I have been out of town the last two weeks. No one has sent me pictures or updates so all I know is that we had Superintendent Ron Wolff from the Box Elder School District last week and Kristin Carr, our last year foreign exchange student yesterday.

Hope the programs were enjoyable and informative. I really wish I could have been here to extend some questions to the Superintendent.

We had a great turnout as we prepared

32 cases of dictionaries for delivery to

local third graders.

We even had a local Kiwanian,

Roger Lowe, helping with the tour.

It's good to see he is given some

limited responsibility, in spite of his

of leadership training, fellowship, and

an all around great experience!

We heard from Dr Tom Lee,

Dean of the USU Brigham City Regional Campus

and he shared with us a presentation

about the long term plans

USU has for the recently purchased land in the Southeast

part of Brigham City. (The old Indian School property)

He provided a number of artist renderings

of the proposed layout

including a closeup of the proposed

new Academic Building.

They're hoping to name the extension of Fishburn Drive

"Aggie Boulevard"

The proposed Acedemic Building

will hold office and classroom space.

Approximately 60,000 square feet,

slightly larger than the existing 100 South space.

Intent will be to continue using the 1100 South location

until a second building can be built,

then move everything to the new space.

What a great addition to the Southeast end of Brigham City

and a very promising long term plan for the regional campus.

was held at the home of Club President Paul Damon.

It was a great event and well attended.

The weather was perfect, the fellowship was excellent

the food was superb!

We extend a big welcome to Cindy Duncan as our newest Club member. Cindy is a Family Nurse Practitioner with a new practice in Perry. She is the daughter of Rotarian Bob Duke and is very excited to be involved in the Brigham City Rotary Club.

Today we held a Club Assembly and worked through a number of items on the agenda.

Discussions were held regarding Peach Days and our annual Raffle. Tickes are now available and each Rotarian should pick up 200 to sell before the Saturday of Peach Days. We also discussed the float and signups for times to man the float and sell tickets.

Next item of discussion was the Dictionary Project. We have received a grant and ordered 900+ dictionaries for delivery to the third graders in Box Elder County. This is an annual project that brings a lot of joy to a lot of kids in the area. Not to mention the joy brought to Rotarians as we participate in the activity of delivering the dictionaries to the schools in the county.

President Damon also shared some preliminary information regarding a local project in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity. Hopefully we'll soon be involved in building a house for a family in the local area.

Next week is the Club Steak Fry at President Damon's home. Be sure to let Paul know if you are planning on being in attendance and if you'll be bringing a guest.

Two weeks will be Kevin Blaylock's program.

Today was our annual

Rotarians and Sons luncheon.

A number of Rotarians had sons in attendance

and all were introduced at the beginning of the meeting.

Connie took care of fellowship by having

select a group of Rotarians to sing to them.

What an awesome rendition of Happy Birthday!

on celebrating another birthday!

Travis Rose raised some money for the Foundation

as Sergeant-At-Arms

Adam Baird introduced our speaker:

Judge Kevin Allen, former Rotarian

who spoke about his involvement with

the Box Elder County Drug Court

and the positive program it is in our area.

The premise of Drug Court is that there are addicts

and the program attempts to deal with the addiction

in place of dwelling on the offense of possession or use.

The long term plan is to help offenders

deal with the addiction and return to being

productive members of society.

So far the program has an 85% success rate.

this informative program with us.

Sorry for my absence. It's been a wild summer...

Last week we heard from Matthew Kennedy on his

service in Uganda. I was unable to attend and received

to photos or updates. I'm sure it was a great program!

We had a couple of guests today, besides our speaker:

Gary Thompson, guest of Jeff Scott.

Bob Davis admirably filled the Sergeant-At-Arms position.

No fines were levied and he reported

the group was well behaved for the day.

Bright and early Saturday morning, June 11th, we loaded 61 teenagers and 25 adults on a 55 passenger bus, 3 Suburbans, a 15 passenger van and a pickup truck and headed for Puerto Peñasco Mexico. This was the beginning of a joint service project made up of Rotarians and Interact club members from across Utah and in cooperation with the Families Helping Families Foundation. Our purpose: Build and house and paint an orphanage...in four days.

16 participants from Brigham City, including 8 teenagers and 8 adults, were involved. Rotarians Jim and Tere Moore, and their daughter Michelle, Rotarians Brad and Annette Barber, and their son Tyler, Interact Club advisor Lou Ann Thompson, Alan Shakespear and his son Colin, Colin's uncle Jason Wilson, Matthew Pulsipher, Preston Shaugaurd, Matthew and Lexi Payne, Tyler Bond, and Emilie Conover.
A brief lunch and volleyball stop in Page, Arizona prior to stopping in Scottsdale, Arizona for an overnight stay. 15 hours on the bus the first day.

Sunday, June 12th, we were on our way to Mexico by about 12:00 noon. As we approached the border, the youth were asked to exit the bus and file one by one through Mexican immigration. The lone attendant asked where we were headed and how many there were of us. When I told her we had 51 teenagers on the bus and we were headed for Puerto Peñasco, she was not very excited.

She asked for our "papers" and I let her know we all had our passports with us. "No", she said, "Do you have your official papers allowing you entry into mexico to work?" My heart sunk as I was now standing with 51 teenagers and 4 adults in the hot Sonoran sun and no idea how we were going to get us into Mexico and back on the bus.

After a few phone calls to her supervisor, she once again asked where we were going and where we were staying. When I told her the hotel we were scheduled to stay at, she said "Oh, you're going as tourists??" "Uh, sure" I replied, "Tourists". "Well then, we can take care of that with each person filling out this form and, since you'll be less than seven days, there will be no charge"

After a massive sigh of relief, and 2 hours of filling out individual forms with each youth there, we were back on the bus and headed for our destination.

Finally, about 8:00 pm, we arrived at the Las Palomas condominium resort in Puerto Peñasco, completely worn out and tired of sitting on a bus.

The next morning, we awoke to view our surroundings. A beautiful resort witth swimming pools and a gorgeous beach just steps away.

Not that we had time to enjoy it then, because half of us were back on the bus at 7:00 am and headed for the Esperanza Children's Home about 35 minutes outside of town. The other half headed for the construction site to begin work on the house.

At the Children's home, we painted, played with the children and delivered gifts to them including clothing, toys and sports equipment.

After dinner and a nights sleep, we were back at it the next morning at the construction site where everyone jumped in and continued the labors of the previous day laying block for the house.

The construction site was about 20 minutes from our condo, but a complete contrast in scenery as the roads and everything surrounding us was dirt, sand and dust. Not to mention the 100+ degree temperatures each day. But the kids didn't complian. They knew this was why we were here and they dove right in, building, learning and giving of themselves for someone else.

The girls did not tlet the boys show them up. And with smiles on their faces!!

We worked Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. Lunch was delivered each day to the work site. And the evenings were filled with volleyball, dinners and fun on the beach and in the pools. Not to mention a couple of hours before heading home to do some shopping and bargaining at the souvenir shops down by the port.
Everyone was proud of their efforts and we received numerous compliments from our construction foreman, Jared Parker, about the quality of work done and the quality of our youth.

To be quite honest, there are a number of those that went that are already excited to go again!

Tue June 21 - Rotarians and Daughters Luncheon

It was a warm one today as the AC in the meeting room

had decided to die and parts on order had not yet arrived.

So we made it through with fans blowing to try and keep it liveable.

Jim Moore and Brad Barber reported on the Mexico Service Project.

It was a great experience and everyone had a great time.

We'll put together a blog post with some pictures soon.

We dispensed with fellowship and Sargeant-at-Arms today

to make time for our guest speaker.

We were treated to a presentation from

Jill Williams Grover

owner and designer of Jillie Willie Designs.

Jill shared her story of how she started designing from a young age

and has turned her designs into a very successful business.

Her mainstay product is aprons

with special influence from family members and friends.

She shared many of the difficulties she experiences as an entrepreneur

as well as the satisfaction and joy of doing things her way

as her own boss.

She also talked about her family and the support and strength

they are to her as she fulfills her dream.

Next week is the Installation Banquet at the
Iron Gate Grill at the Golf Course Country Club building.

Our Speaker today was Senator Peter C Knudson

a member of the brigham City Rotary Club

and our Senator from northern Utah.

Senator Knudson discussed Legislative Processes,

Redistricting and Health Care.

It was an interesting presentation as it always is.

Don't miss next week when we will hear from

Habitat For Humanity.

Quite an event filled day at Rotary!

We had a full house with nearly every seat filled.

Both Larry Boyer and Travis Rose were conspicuously missing

so there was no one to take care of the Sargent-At-Arms duties.

I suggested they each be fined $10.00.

My apologies, Rotarians

I got behind and have been out of town

so the blog was left to fend for itself

for a couple of weeks.

Two weeks ago we heard from Brian Hyde, a representative

of Autoliv, but I do not have details of the visit.

Last week was cleanup at Rotary Constitution Park.

We had a small crowd, but there wasn't much to clean up

so we enjoyed the fellowship and walk in the park.

We'll be hearing from the

High School Essay Contest Winners today.

We had great participation at the

Race for Polio around Mantua Reservoir

on Saturday, May 7th.

We had about 40 participants, which was good

for a first time event of this type

considering all of the other activities

going on that day.

We had the opportunity to listen to Lea Herbers today.

Lea comes from Lippstadt Germany and has been staying

with the Vincents, Kennedy's and Carr's as our

inbound exchange student this past year.

She shared information about her hometown, her family,

her school and the experience she has had

as an exchange student.

Those who have had the opportunity to get to know Lea

have all had great things to say about her.

We have appreciated the opportunity to get to know her

and sponsor her here in Brigham city this past year.

A big thanks to the Vincent's, Kennedy's and Carr's

for acting as host families. Hopefully we will have

the opportunity to host again sometime in the future.

It was a great day for an

Administrative Assistant's Luncheon.

We had a number of guests in attendance

and had the distinct opportunity to hear

a presentation on Bed Bugs!

There was a lot of squirming and scratching going on

as we learned the datails of the dreaded bed bug

and how prolific they have become lately.

Our presenter, Kevin Thorne,

brought far more pictures than most wanted to see,

as well as a jar of bed bugs for those who were tough enough

to pass around and look at up close.

and let a couple of them nibble her arm...

Quite an interesting Admin Asst Day!

For those wondering who won the "pop top prize":

Travis Rose guessed the bag of pop tops weighed 5.0 pounds.

Actual weight was 5.1 pounds.

since Laurie Vellinga was unable to attend.

was our speaker today. He presented information

about the State "Custom Fit" training program

helping businesses become more productive and efficient.

We had a full house today!

It was great to see every seat filled.

President Jim Moore announced the passing of Shirley Simper,

widow of Rotarian and PDG James Simper.

Her funeral was held yesterday and a donation was made

to the club in her name by friends of the Simpers.

Malone Molgard reviewed the information for the

Rotary Torch Run to be held in Mantua

on May 7, 2011.

The 4.2 mile course runs around Mantua Resevoir

and will be used as a fund raiser for Polio Plus.

The cost to run the race will be $20.00 per participant

and will include a T-shirt and entry into a raffle.

Rae Riser presented fellowship and

Rennie Bott was serenaded with Happy Birthday.

Larry Boyer gave us a reprieve from

Sergeant-At-Arms today

as we were running a little over.

Jack Molgard introduced our speaker

Mr Craig Bunnell

State of Utah Director for the

Guardian Ad Litem program

which provides court appointed attorneys for

abused and neglected children.

"It is the duty of the Guardian Ad Litem

To stand in the shoes of the child."

We appreciate Mr Bunnell for his

informative presentation.

Rotary meeting today was a variety of

items and topics.

We were first happy to hear from Rae Riser

as she brought us up to date on club members

and family in the news.

Travis Rose filled the Sergeant-At-Arms spot today

and raised funds for the Foundation.

President Moore reviewed Club projects Year to Date

inlcuding $2000 donation to the Ecuador Schools project

in joint effort with the Logan Rotary Clubs

Also, $1000 donated the the Uganda/Rwanda Dental project

spearheaded by Rotarian Jerry Capener.

Locally, we are in the process of planning

a "Welcome to Brigham City" sign

jointly with the Brigham Kiwanis Club.

A preliminary proposal from Bott Monument

was shown and looked very nice.

Eventually we would like to place them

in multiple locations entering the city.

Newer member Jeff Scott gave his

Classification talk today telling us about

his family, education and chosen profession.

Great to have Jeff in the Club!

We then heard from Rotarian Jerry Capener

as he shared a slide presentation of his recent trip

to Uganda and Rwanda to provide dental equipment

and training to local dental professionals.

His trip was from Jan 15, 2011 to Feb 15, 2011

Thanks, Jerry, for the presentation and for

allowing us to help the people of Uganda/Rwanda.

Next week our guest speaker will be

Attorney Roger Baron.

A reminder was made of the

orange sales fundraiser to help those youth

that are attending the Mexico project.

Larry Boyer extracted a few dollars for

the Rotary Foundation.

Our speaker was Representative Lee Perry

who shared informaation and insight about the

recent Utah Legislative Session.

He discussed a number of items including

immigration reform and GRAMA law changes.

He shared the top three budget items

1. Education

2. Medicaid

3. Higer Education

We have great representation in the Legislature

with Representative Perry

as well as Rotarian Senator Pete Knudson.

Announcements:

We have 9 adults and 9 youth signed up and committed

to the mexico Humanitarian Aid Trip this summer.

Preparations are beginning and plans being laid for

transportation, fund raising and logostics for the trip.

It will be a great experience for our local youth

as well as the adult chaperones going along.

The Community Pantry is holding its annual fund raiser:

Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner and Silent Auction

Saturday March 12, 7:00 pm at the Community Center.

Music will be provided by Leaping LouLou.

Tickets are @20.00 per person

March is Rotary Literacy Month.

Sergeant-At-Arms Larry Boyer reminded everyone

to read the March edition of the Rotarian Magazine.

50 years ago today the Peace Corps was organized.

Dan Hansen introduced today's speaker:

Josi Kilpack is a resident of Perry

and an accomplished author of LDS themed books.

She has published 13 novels and continues to write,

published by Deseret Book Company.

Josi shared her history with literature and reading,

including her lack of interest in the same until her

7th grade reading assignment and book report

completely changed her perspective and interested her

in the art of writing.

She shared 5 gifts that can help each of us find success

in whatever field we venture into:

1. Ability

2. Passion

3. Drive and Ambition

4. Example

5. Opportunity

In fellowship today, Dan Price announced the birth

of a new granddaughter. It only cost him $10.00....

$10.00???? What's up with that?

Bruce Evens and James Boel were celebrating birthdays

but not at our meeting, so we'll have to wait to sing

to them on another day.

Larry Boyer, Sergeant-At-Arms raised funds for the

Rotary Foundation with a number of questions about

the early days in Rotary.

Mayor Dennis Fife introduced our speaker for the meeting

Dr Tom Lee is

Dean of Utah State Brigham City Regional Campus.

Dr Lee shared a lot of information about the future of

the Brigham City Regional Campus since the recent

purchased of property in the SouthEast part of town.

We have a great treasure here in Brigham City in

the USU Brigham City Regional Campus and

continued growth of the campus seems to be slated

for the coming future.

Brigham City Rotary Club met today

for lunch and fellowship.

Rae Riser brought us up to date on the local news

and made sure a wonderful quartet sang happy birthday

to Rotarians Bob Davis and Dennis Fife.

Mayor Dennis Fife presented the program

sharing the highlights from his recent

State of the City address.

The Mayor shared lots of information about Brigham City

and the great things our community is accomplishing.

Tuesday was our annual Sweethearts Luncheon

and there were plenty in attendance!

a local marriage counselor who shared a great message
about relationships.
Lots of hugs were shared and a good time was had by all!

First day of a new month and it's cold!

Meeting was well attended today with Jeremy Barber visiting

with Brad and Annette. Looks like he'll be re-joining the club.

Glad to have you back, Jeremy!

President Jim Moore shared a couple of thank you cards

received from elementary school students that had

been recipients of our annual dictionary project.

Rae Riser updated the club with fellowship.

Travis Rose shared news of the birth of his new granddaughter.

Ken Kennedy told us of his son who is currently in Uganda

providing micro credit loans.

Sergeant-At-Arms Larry Boyer raised a few dollars for the Foundation.

Malone Molgard introduced our speaker Willie Hunsaker

who spoke on Integrity, Scouting and the local VFW support of Eagle Scouts.

They have given over 1900 flags to Eagle Scouts

in the Northern Utah Area over the years.

He also provides the white crosses for veterans at local cemeteries

and keeps them in good repair.

To finalize his presentation, he had two Rotarians, that are also VFW members

fold an American Flag for us, while he read the flag folding ceremony

telling the significance of the folding of the flag.

We appreciate Mr Hunsaker taking time to talk with us sharing

his love of this country, our flag and the Boy Scouts of America.

It was another great day for Rotary,

in spite of the snow!

We received a thank you letter from the

Box Elder Interact Club

after providing them a pizza party after they

collected double the amount the Rotary Club collected

in our Pinkies for Polio Challenge.

Great job, Interactors!!

We inducted two new Rotarians today.

Jeff Scott who works in Financial Planning

and Dr Randy Capener a local dentist

and son of Rotarian Jerry Capener.

Both shared a brief introduction and are excited

to be new members and ready to participate in the Rotary Club.

Rae Riser treated us to fellowship along with

birthday greetings sung to Larry Boyer and Les Dunn

Rotarian Jodi McFall received a plaque of appreciation

for her pledge to the Rotary Foundation as a Benefactor.

Sergeant-at-Arms Larry Boyer took the opportunity

to hear from various club members about why they joined Rotary.

It was enlightening and a great opportunity to hear the stories

that have brought members into the club.

Assistant Governor Steve Skinner presented a club history

and talked about a continuation of the Polio Plus Challenge

including information about the Centennial Celebration torch run

which will be held leading up to the Distrcit Conference in May.

We wish to give a big thank you to AG Skinner for the help

and support he has provided our club while he has served

as Assistant District Governor.

about the new development now under construction

on 500 West, South of the hospital.

I'm sorry that I was unable to attend

due to a small water issue in my basement.

Monday evening, at 7:00 pm,

we had a number of Rotarians, Interactors and their parents

attend a special presentation about the

Familes Helping Families project scheduled for this June

in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico.

Youth and adults from across the state have been invited

to participate in the house building project being spearheaded

by the Familes Helping Families foundation.

Mike Wells, the Utah Rotary District New Generations Chair and

Jared Parker from Families Helping Familes Foundation

presented information and details of the proposed project.

The projest is scheduled for June 11 through June 18, 2011.

Youth and adults from our club are invited to share their time

and abilities to help build a house for a family in need

in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico.

There was a lot of interest,

with a number of Rotarians and youth already committed to go.

Sat Jan 15 - All Clubs Centennial Celebration

Brigham City Club had a great turn out for the All Clubs Centennial Celebration.

About 17 Brigham City Rotarians were in attendance

and enjoyed an evening of good food and great entertainment.

Mark Eaton, former Utah Jazz player,

shared his philosophy for being great at what you do.

Jenny Froggley and Alex Boyé wowed us with their music,

many birthday wishes were shared with the Salt Lake City Club

and numerous awards and recognitions were provided

to Rotarians from across the state.

If you missed the evening, you missed out on a special treat!

It was good to be back at Rotary

for food, fellowship and a great program!

Rae Riser played "catch up" after the holidays

with a long list of Rotarian family accomplishments.

What a great job she does keeping track

of Rotarians and their families in the news!

Congratulations to Larry Boyer, Sargeant-at-Arms.

Not only did he benefit the Foundation

with a round of "PIN" fines.

But he was the first and only Rotarian

to catch the "challenge" on the blog page.

$10.00 will be donated to Polio Plus in Larry's name

by Brad Barber, Web/Blogmaster.

Lunch was delicious, as always. Thanks to the Hospital ladies

for taking such good care of us!

Our program was presented by Carrie Romano

of Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Carrie provided a great overview of the RMH Carities

and how they specifically benefit children from

our local area.

She also shared information about one of their fund raisers,

"Pull the Top - Make the Drop"

Collection of soda can pop tops provides a continuous

source of revenue for the charity

and each of us can help by collecting and donating

pop tops to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Ann Henderson keeps a jar at her office

that is continually being refilled by staff and students

at the USU Extension.

She'd be happy to collect your pop tops

each week at Rotary to add to the fund.

We had a good crowd at Rotary today.

Rae Riser provided updates on Rotarians and family in the news.

Then the entire group sang "Happy Birthday"

to Club President Jim Moore.

Larry Boyer reviewed through a number of questions for Rotarians

as Sergeant-at-Arms, but there were no fines today!

We were pleased to hear from 5 participants in the

American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program.

These girls, along with many from throughout Utah

participated in a program that helps them

learn and understand more about how government functions.

Each had the opportunity to run for office,

vote, review "legislation" and administer government entities.

Good luck to each of them as they continue their education

and now have a greater understanding of the functions

of government in Utah and the United States.

We had 28 in attendance today for club meeting.

Not a bad number,

but about half of what should be there on a weekly basis....

Steve Vincent received birthday wishes from a quartet of Rotarians.

Rae Riser brought us up to date on the happenings in the community

and with Rotarians and families in the news.

Larry Boyer had some pretty good questions

and made a few folks think hardto raise money for the Foundation.

Brad Barber reminded everyone that it is nominations/elections time.

He invited any Rotarian who is interested

in filling a Director spot, or serving as President Elect Nominee

to let him know so the Committee can be prepared in time for the Christmas Party.

Our guest speaker was Fred Berthrong.

Fred is a past District Governor

and is currently serving as District Foundation Chair.

He presented a great slide show and information

about the Foundation and the history of Polio Plus.

It was a good opportunity to gain a greater understanding

of the Foundation

and how each of us can help the Polio eradication effort.

about the projects they have been involved in

Included was a discussion about a continuation of the project

our club has joined which will provide bathroom facilities

We had a great turn out at club meeting today with almost every chair filled!

Rotarian Doug Beezer shared his Classification Talk today. Doug graduated from USU and is continuing to pursue a Masters Degree there. He is also the Advertising Manager for the Box Elder News Journal. He is married and has two children with a third on the way.

It was great to get to know Doug a little better.

Rae Riser was unable to attend today so we missed her fellowship items. We'll look forward to seeing her next week!

Travis Rose took over the duties of Sergeant-at-Arms in Larry Boyer's absence. It was a good day to be at Rotary as there were no fines issued and a credit provided to each of our Rotarian veterans in honor of Veterans Day coming this week.

We had the pleasure of hearing from Danny and Betsy Ryan, representatives of Engineers Without Borders. A national organization whose aim is to provide sustainable projects in third world countries.

Ryan is an engineering student at USU. Through EWB, he and Betsy have been involved with an orphanage in Masaka Uganda since 2005.

Last Rotary year, our club donated $500 to EWB and we were pleased to view a presentation of some of the things they were involved in this last summer.

Their current project is with the Byana Mary Hill school and orphanage. This last year they were involved in providing a fish pond as a source of revenue and food for the school.

They also helped construct a new latrine facility and placed internet nodes in the school to help with education of the students.

Their next plans at the school include continuing to improve water quality, constructing handwashing stations for the students as well as improved shower facilities. Each of these projects helps the school better prepare to qualify for local government grants that will greatly inprove the quality of life for the 500 students at the school.

As Danny and Betsy were leaving, they promised to forward a copy of the "Thank You" song video presented by the students. Once I receive it, I will attach it as part of this post. It was wonderful!

Rotarians Jerry Capener and Pete Knudson were treated to a rousing round of "Happy Birthday" by a select choir of their choosing.

Sergeant-at-Arms Larry Boyer raised a few dollars for the Foundation, letting Jerry Capener off very lightly following the announcement of a new grand son.

Sophie Rex, another of our scholarship recipients, shared a little about herself and thanked the Club for the scholarship funds. She also got a little pressure from our Interact folks to look into the Rotoract club up at USU.

The Box Elder Interact Club is gearing up for Purple Pinkie Day, their project to raise funds for Polio eradication. They'll be the sole presenters in the B1 class at the high school in a couple of weeks, bringing Polio awareness to a whole new group of students at the High School and are looking for Rotarians to help in that effort. We can be sure of a "challenge" from them soon in raising money to meet our Polio Plus goals.

Rotarian Dave Lewis presented a program on The Rotary Foundation. He reviewed the purpose of the Foundation and our opportunity to fund and benefit from it.

A reminder of the new Future Focus that our District is a part of as well as the many possibilities for donating and providing support for the Foundation.

Time to crank up those Sergeant-At-Arms fines and build the fund!

The club was treated to a special meeting today as we heard from two of our RYLA participants, as well as from one of our Scholarship recipients.

Valerie Tingey and Colin Shakespear shared some of their experiences and feelings about RYLA and the training they received there. Both were glad they had attended, in spite of having to miss the annual Peach Days Celebration in Brigham City. There was much to be learned and each felt they came away better off for having attended.

Both are also involved in leadership positions in the Box Elder Interact Club.

We were also introduced to Mercedes O'Grady who was one of the scholarship recipients this last year.

Those who missed the meeting today missed a great opportuniry to hear from our youth that are very involved in the Rotary movement.

It was a beautiful day as we met as a club for our semi-annual park cleanup day. All Rotarianss in attendance were treated to a delicious box lunch and then made a "clean sweep" of the park, picking up litter and working to keep the park clean and looking good.

Rotary Constitution Park continues to be a very visible sign of the dedication of the Brigham City Rotary Club and we can each share in thee sense of pride that being involved here brings!

Tuesday's meeting was dedicated to preparing the dictionaries for delivery to all third graders in the County. We had a good turnout and took care of placing Rotary Emblems and the Four Way Test in each of the dictionaries in short order.

A portion of the dictionaries were held aside and made abvailable to the Box Elder Interact Club to participate in preparation, also. They were excited to be a part of this great project.

Deliveries have begun and will continue over the next few weeks as we have the opportunity to give each thrid grader their own copy of a dictionary.

Thanks to everyone for their participation and support for this very valuable project.

Brigham City Rotary Club had the great honor today of hearing

from our new District Governor

Penny Atkinson.

What an inspiration to hear from her as she shared her experiences,

goals, and vision for District 5420 in 2010 - 2011.

She is a powerful example of the values of Rotary

and the excitement that each of us should have for this

powerful organization.

She emphasized the importance of being Rotarians

not just belonging to Rotary.

She spoke of how close we are as an organization

to wiping polio from the face of the earth.

From it's beginnings in 1985,

Polio Plus has reduced the number of polio cases worldwide

from over 350,000 cases a year

to less than 2000 in 2008!

And Rotary, including each member of our club,

has been the catalyst in making that happen.

But there is more to do!

She also encouraged everyone to attend

the All Clubs Event in Salt Lake this January

as well as the District Conference in Cedar City in May.

This is the Centennial Year of Rotary in Utah,

with the Salt Lake City Club being the first club chartered in Utah

100 years ago!

It's a great time to be involved in Rotary!

Following the suggestion of our District Governor, a very successful special Membership Meeting was held, following letters sent directly to local business people suggesting they find out more about Rotary.

We had 8 guests in attendance that were told about Rotary and the many projects our local club has been involved in over the years, and those we are in the midst of right now.

It was a very informational meeting and those in attendance were very interested in the opportunity Rotary provides to really get involved.

We look forward to seeing those guests in attendance join the ranks of Rotary and continue to provide service locally and internationally!

Our speaker today was the general manager of the Utah Blaze, Steve Videtich. He gave us a history of the AFL and let us know about the upcoming season.

We welcomed two new members to our club. Mayor Dennis Fife and James Bull who is a manager at the Wal-Mart in Perry.

We raised just short of 1500.00 for the Haiti relief fund. That number will be matched by the club. If you are still interested in donating please contact Brad Barber.

Our speaker this week was Donna McCrea. She spoke to us about her business "Just Bee Scrap'n" and how she tries to keep people shopping in Brigham City. She shared with us her thoughts on the importance of customer service.

Our speaker today was the new Dean at the Utah State University Brigham City Regional Campus. Tom Lee spoke about where the campus is, where it has come from, and where it is going.

In our meeting Tuesday, Jeff Packer extended a challenge to each Rotarian and to the Club regarding financial support for Haiti. If you go to the RI website, you can see the things RI and many Rotary Clubs are doing to assist there.

Jeff challenged all Rotarians to give through the charity of their choice, but then extended a specific challenge to Club members to donate through the Club and challenged the Club to match any funds donated through the Club.

The Club will match all donations made by Rotarians through thee Brigham City Rotary Club. We want to expedite this so please get with me or with Jodi McFall within the next week with your donation. Make the check payable to the Brigham City Rotary Club and write "For Haiti Relief" on the check. We will collect funds through Friday, Feb 12. Once we have collected all the donations, the Club will match that total and we will send the funds RI for direct disbursal to Haiti Relief efforts.

With that said, I have a donation of $100 that has been made along with a challenge from the donor to every Rotarian in the Club to match that amount. Obviously, we are looking for any amount, but it would be great to see a number of matches to that challenge.
